As a Meter Reader, you will be responsible for reading power, gas, and water meters across the North Shore and surrounding areas. You will be walking through different neighborhoods, covering approximately 5–6 kilometers per day, and driving set routes between your readings. Along the way, you’ll meet a variety of people—and perhaps their pets while ensuring accurate and timely data collection that supports essential utility services throughout the region. This role requires resilience, attentiveness, and a commitment to high standards of work in all weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and accurately record readings for gas, water, and electricity meters in residential and commercial properties.
  • Walk assigned routes, covering up to 5–6 kilometers per day, and drive safely between locations using a company-provided vehicle.
  • Lift and handle meter reading equipment and other tools safely, including weights of up to 20 kilograms when necessary.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, wind, and heat, maintaining professionalism and efficiency regardless of environmental challenges.
  • Interact courteously and professionally with residents, building rapport when necessary, and navigate encounters with household pets safely.
  • Ensure all data collected is logged correctly and submitted in accordance with company procedures.
  • Follow health and safety guidelines to protect yourself, your colleagues, and the public during all aspects of meter reading.
  • Identify and report any unusual readings, damages, or hazards to the supervisor promptly.
  • Occasionally assist with ad hoc operational tasks to support team efficiency.

Who We’re Looking For

This role is physically active, so the ideal candidate will enjoy working on their feet, walking long distances, and being outdoors. You will need a strong level of physical fitness to navigate varying terrains, climb stairs, bend, and hop in and out of a vehicle repeatedly throughout the day. In addition, comfort around dogs is essential, as many homes have pets that may be encountered during meter readings.

Other key attributes include:

  • Reliability and punctuality, with a strong commitment to completing assigned routes accurately and on time.
  • Good attention to detail and the ability to record data carefully.
  • Adaptability to work independently while also being part of a larger team.
  • Positive, friendly attitude when interacting with members of the public.

Requirements

  • Full New Zealand driver’s license.
  • Must be a New Zealand or Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
  • Clear criminal record (MOJ check required).

No prior experience in meter reading is necessary, as full training is provided. What matters most is your willingness to learn, reliability, and ability to manage physically active work independently.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly wage of $24.01 during the first three months of employment, transitioning to a performance-based piece rate thereafter.
  • Comprehensive on-the-job training to ensure confidence and competence in all aspects of meter reading.
  • Company-provided uniform and steel-capped boots to ensure safety and professionalism in the field.
  • Work vehicle and fuel card supplied for business-related travel.
  • Life and trauma insurance coverage.
  • Health insurance eligibility after 24 months of service.
