As a Meter Reader, you will play an essential role in reading power, gas, and water meters across the Wellington region. The role requires both driving and walking as you travel through urban, suburban, and rural areas, covering diverse routes each day. On your journey, you will engage with residents, navigate various terrains, and ensure that all meter readings are accurately captured and recorded on handheld devices.

Key Responsibilities
- Meter Reading: Accurately read power, gas, and water meters across residential and commercial properties. Use a handheld device to record readings efficiently and correctly.
- Route Management: Drive assigned routes between meter locations safely, ensuring timely completion of daily assignments. Navigate different areas, including city streets and suburban or rural properties.
- Walking and Physical Activity: Walk approximately 5–6 kilometers per day, climb in and out of vehicles, and move over uneven or challenging terrain. Reach, bend, or lift meters as required.
- Customer Interaction: Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor when interacting with residents. Answer questions politely and address minor concerns regarding meter readings.
- Follow all company and safety procedures at all times to protect yourself, customers, and colleagues. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) supplied by the company.
- Safely manage meter reading devices, tools, and any equipment necessary for the completion of daily tasks. Lift and handle items up to 20 kilograms as required.
- Ensure accurate and timely logging of meter readings and report any anomalies, damaged meters, or safety hazards to your supervisor.
Who We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate for this role is physically fit, resilient, and comfortable with outdoor work. Meter reading requires independence, attention to detail, and the ability to manage a physically active workload. You will need to:
- Walk significant distances daily while maintaining attention to detail.
- Navigate a variety of terrains and work outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, wind, and heat.
- Lift and carry up to 20 kilograms safely.
- Be comfortable around dogs and other pets commonly found at residential properties.
- Maintain professionalism and a positive attitude in all interactions with customers and team members.
Requirements
- Driver’s License: Full New Zealand driver’s license is mandatory.
- Eligibility to Work: Must have legal right to work in New Zealand (citizenship, residency, or valid work visa).
- Background Checks: Must pass pre-employment drug/alcohol testing and a Ministry of Justice check with no criminal convictions.
- Physical Readiness: Must be physically capable of walking multiple kilometers daily, climbing in and out of vehicles, and performing bending or lifting tasks.

Work Schedule
- Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00-5:00 PM, with occasional Saturdays required.
- 40 hours per week, with flexible overtime available depending on workload.
